Last Fall, I made a post of eco-friendly candles to welcome in the holiday, and didn't realize it would be so popular - or maybe that should have been a given. Who doesn't love candles? Whenever we have company over, I always have one lit. There's just something so cozy about a lit candle, but it's important to choose ones that aren't allowing toxic chemicals to be released in your home.
Why Choose a Non-Toxic Candle?
When you light a candle, they are giving off much more than just a scent. The fumes will carry the ingredients of your candle to the rest of your house (and your lungs). Because the candle industry isn't highly regulated, many candles consist of synthetic fragrances made from crude oil and petroleum-based waxes. We don't really know what the long term effects are from burning these in our home, but better safe than sorry, right?!
This list is made up of some of my favorite candle brands who only use the best ingredients to keep you safe & healthy.

Looking for just classic taper candles for your home? These Greentree Home Candles found at Shades of Green are hand-poured from 100% pure North American beeswax and individually finished in central New York state without any added fragrance! As someone who loves candelabras, tapers are a staple in our home, and I trust Shades of Green to find the best quality there is! You can also find beeswax votive & tealight candle sets.
2) Prosperity Candle

This is one of my favorite ethical candle companies! Every candle is handmade by women artisans & refugees here in the U.S. They never add any dyes or enhancers, and each is poured with all-natural soy and coconut waxes, pure cotton and wood wicks, & premium fragrances made with essential oils. Recently, they launched their Be Well Candles, which are created by an Oregon-based aromatherapist consultant, and come in 3 different scents.
3) GROW Fragrance

I just recently received these candles from one of my favorite air freshener brands, GROW! They are so cool because the vessel is refillable and the refills are made from 100% recyclable (recycled) aluminum. Everything is handmade in the USA from 100% certified plant-based blend of soy and coconut oil, and plant-based fragrance. Even the wick is lead-free and unbleached. If you are looking for a zero-waste candle, I highly recommend this one!
4) Ritual & Fancy

Based out of Portland, Oregon, Ritual & Fancy is a woman & POC-owned candle brand, and I just find these candles absolutely beautiful! Each of these beauties are hand-poured with 100% vegan soy wax derived from a renewable resource, a slow-burning wood wick, and is topped with real pressed flowers. All fragrances are made with ethically and sustainably sourced therapeutic-grade essential oils and natural botanicals cultivated from renewable sources.
5) OM Matters
Price: $34
This one is perfect for the yogis and meditators! The Dhāranā Meditation and Yoga candle is orange blossom scented and created to support your meditation practice. You are supposed to light the candle and place it a foot or so in front of you while meditating. Then, sit comfortably and soften your gaze on the flame while directing your attention to your breath for a calming sensation. The candle is made mindfully in the USA using orange blossom essential oils & all natural products!
6) Madison Grace

This "Signature" eco chic candle from Madison Grace is made from a sustainable 100% natural coconut wax blend with a lead-free cotton wick. It has hints of vanilla, fig and cashmere, and is responsibly made by adults challenged with physical + mental disabilities in California. By purchasing this candle, you are helping provide meaningful work that uplifts their self-esteem while they gain dignified work. A great glass jar to reuse, too!
7) NaturalAnnie Essentials

NaturalAnnie Essentials is a Black-owned candle company created by a certified aromatherapist named Annie. All candles are made in small batches in her home studio to ensure freshness, purity, and effectiveness. They are absolutely free of chemicals, and only made with pure essential oils, natural butters, and infused herbal oils. The products are never tested on animals, and there are no parabens, no sulfates, no phthalates, or fake perfumes.
8) P.f. Candle Co.

All P.F. Candle Co. candles are hand-poured with 100% domestically-grown soy wax into apothecary inspired amber jars with a signature kraft label and a brass lid. They are a LA-based brand, and they have a strong commitment to sustainability. Their entire collection is vegan, cruelty-free and phthalate-free, and all candles come in completely reusable jars so you don't have to throw anything away. Why would you want to throw such a pretty jar like the one pictured?!
9) Sundays

You may be familiar with this brand and their nail polish, but recently they came out with a couple of candles! Their candles are made with a combination of 3 notes to create a soothing and long-lasting scent consisting of essential oils and almond oil. They are made of 100% non-GMO soybean wax, have a 100% unbleached cotton wick, and come in a hand-made matte finish ceramic container - which is another beautiful jar to reuse when you are finished with the candle!
10) Nightshift Wax Co

These cruelty-free candles are made from with 100% american grown soy wax and premium grade oils and organic cotton braided wicks. With these ingredients, you will have a clean-burn that is eco-friendly for your home. They are hand-poured in recycled glass, and made without synthetic ingredients, animal ingredients, phthalates, chemicals, fillers, mineral oils, petroleum, paraffin, or toxins. 11) Obakki

If you are looking for more decorative, unique candles, Obakki is one to check out! Their decorative sumac candles are handmade in Ishikawa, Japan by a family run business who have been creating traditional Japanese candles, also known as 'wa-rousoku', since 1892. They are sustainable and vegan, and made from wax harvested from the fruit of the Japanese Haze tree. And the hollow wicks allow them to produce a bright, tall flame.

If you are looking for a budget-friendly, eco-friendly candle, Public Goods is one to check out. These candles are made with natural hand-poured soy wax, cotton wicks, and premium fragrance oils like cedarwood and jasmine. They are free from lead, dyes, BPA or phthalates, and are made in USA. I keep these in my guest bathroom, and love all three scents they carry so I suggest purchasing the 3-pack!
13) Under the Canopy

Under the Canopy is one of my favorite sustainable home brands because not only is their quality great, but they are actually quite affordable. Recently, they launched a candle, and I have the Eucalyptus Lavender. It smells sooo good, and is made with hand poured 100% natural soy wax that is grown in the US. They are naturally infused with essential oils for a cleaner burn, and they are all free of phthalates, dyes, and additives.
